NAFAS Demonstrators

NAFAS DEMONSTRATORS are qualified at Area and National level. Qualification Tests for Area Demonstrators are held regularly within each Area. Demonstrations play an important part in flower club programmes with each demonstrator creating a variety of individually tailored floral exhibits, from classical to contemporary, often influenced by nature or a trendy new idea. Audiences can enjoy a ‘live show’ combining art, horticulture and theatre.

Beverley Artis

NAFAS Area Demonstrator

I am based in Long Eaton, Junction 25 of the M1. I have been a florist since 2002 running shops in Coalville and Hathern. I now work from home concentrating on my demonstrating, teaching, wedding and event work and being the Programme Secretary for Castle Donington and District Flower Club.

I like to make my demonstrations fun, sharing the experiences I have had in the florist industry over the years, and there are some howlers! I’m closely involved in the wholesale floristry side of the business (I married my wholesaler!) and love to bring new ideas and varieties of flowers to my demonstrations.

Her work is predominantly large scale and inspired by organic natural forms. Paula Routledge

NAFAS Area Demonstrator

As a recently qualified Area Demonstrator (2017) I cannot wait to begin my journey of flowers throughout the North Midlands. I am currently demonstrating with Trainee Demonstrator, Jade Loftus: our title ‘Coast to Coast’ is all about a 170 mile bike ride we did for charity.

With over 30 years in the horticultural industry, I am so humbled to be able to express my passion for plants and the countryside through my floral creations.

Working with my husband we currently run Floral Media, based in the rural village of Caunton, near Newark. We both enjoy sharing our home and gardens to private group visits and during the summer host large wedding parties in our purpose built venue.

Our gardens are also open for The Red Cross and the National Garden Scheme.

In 2015 I joined BBC Radio Nottingham as a gardening broadcaster. A job I absolutely love!

I have been a florist for 15 years, creating flowers from my little workshop for many events, including for the past 7 years the Pink Ribbon Ball at The Dorchester in London.

In recent years I have loved entering the Nafas Floral Art Competitions. My proudest moment gaining a 1st at Harrogate Spring Show 2017, and seeing it featured in my favourite magazine ‘The Flower Arranger’. Other achievements include a 1st in the Club Class at Lincoln Show 2017 and Commended and a third in the joint class at The National Show in Blackpool 2017.

As a member of Southwell Flower Club and Future Concepts I am so excited about what the future may hold!

Having passed the Area test in 2012, I have spent a very enjoyable five years developing new demonstrations and floral arrangements using various techniques learnt, and passing on this knowledge to Flower Clubs within and outside the North Midlands Area.  I very much enjoy the process of creating demonstrations and designing arrangements, meeting people and spreading the joy of flowers and floral design to many different audiences.  Passing on skills and techniques, promoting events within NAFAS and encouraging new members is something I am very passionate about.

Linda Smith

NAFAS Area Demonstrator

Originally from Kettering in Northamptonshire, I have lived in Nottinghamshire for many years; I qualified as an Area Demonstrator in 2012.

My demonstration titles are inspired mainly by travel and seasonal materials from the natural world. I also find the European style of flower arranging inspirational. Researching topics for my demonstrations and selecting plant material that closely interpret my titles are something that I really enjoy.

I am a long standing member of Breaston Flower Circle and have served as a committee member (including Chairman) for many years; I am also a member of Future Concepts.

Apart from floral design, my other interests are travel (particularly to Arctic countries and Italy!) and botanical illustration.

Susan Smithson

NAFAS Area Demonstrator

Susan qualified as a NAFAS Area Demonstrator, passing her test at Oxton in the North Midlands Area in 2009. In June the same year she qualified as a florist with a National Certificate (Level 2) in floristry, gained at Moreton Morell College in Warwickshire. She also attends all NAFAS Refresher Courses in both North Midlands and South Midlands Areas wherever possible.

Susan grew up in rural Oxfordshire and has always been a lover of flowers and nature but only took to flower arranging rather late in life, inspired by her late father-in-law, a trained nurseryman and keen amateur gardener. With her husband, Philip, they also have two allotments of their own.

She leads a very busy life with flowers and plants occupying almost every waking (and sleeping!) moment including helping with the village church flowers as well as several other local churches and Banbury Town Hall, plus wedding and funeral work. The garden and allotments produce a wealth of garden plant material for her arrangements as well as a year-round supply of fresh fruit and veg. Susan is a member of Banbury Floral Art Group and Bloxham Flower Club and enjoys competing at local and Area level, just for fun, using her own flowers and plant material whenever possible. She won the Novice Class at the Royal Show in 2008.

Susan takes great pride in the quality of her plant material and her demonstrations are geared to show how the designs can be recreated by the keen flower arranger at home. They combine the spectacular with the practical with an entertaining presentation to send the audience home inspired and happy!
